10 Reasons to Learn to Play the Piano

Learn to Play the Piano

People think playing the piano is hard. They don’t want to put in the time, because they figure they won’t be virtuosos or concert pianists, so what’s the point? As a musician and a piano teacher I can tell you there are many reasons why everyone should learn to play the piano, even if just a little bit and for yourself.

I’ve been playing for over 20 years, people think I’m wonderful. Personally I don’t even think I’m that good. But I play with feeling and I have some skill so I guess that’s all it takes sometimes.

I love to play though, that’s the difference for me than with other people, I guess. They either don’t love to play, or they don’t “know” yet that they love to play. It’s a little like trying new foods, how can you know you won’t like it, if you don’t try it?

What people also don’t know is that learning to play the piano can actually improve your health. Yup, you heard me right. Playing the piano can make you healthier!

Well, it’s a lot like why having friends is good for you, or why pets make you live longer (or so they say). It helps produce “feel good” chemicals in your body that can help you to feel less stressed, help calm you, help cure depression, make you smile (no really it does!). It also is extremely, and I mean EXTREMELY good for your brain.

You are learning something new after all, and it’s like another language. It can be complex. Learning how to play with both hands can be difficult, reading music makes your brain muscles work so therefore…it’s great for your brain!! But that’s just the tip of the ice berg. Below I’ll show you more benefits.

10 Reasons to Learn to Play the Piano:

1. It’s relaxing

2. It’s fun

3. It helps build your finger/muscle coordination and strength

4. It helps your brain

5. It improves math skills

6. It’s rewarding

7. It will help enhance other musical skills you may have

8. It keeps you young

9. It adds to other people’s lives who hear you play

10. It gives you a sense of accomplishment to learn something new

I’m sure I could think of more reasons, the coordination and enhanced brain skill, especially as we get older is a huge one though. Not to mention how rewarding it is to learn something new and then play it and realize you just did something that you always thought for yourself was impossible.

Broken down into steps, the piano isn’t that hard. You don’t have to be a genius or perform live for it to be a bonus to your life. Music is universal and it enhances our lives, it will make you feel young and vibrant and keep your skills sharp.

If you learn to play when you are older, your children may see you learning and want to learn too, that is a huge plus side. Many families have no music in them, that is sad to me because my house is filled with music and I see my children’s faces light up; I cannot imagine homes without such a thing. So if you don’t have it, introduce it, you won’t regret it!

I really believe ALL children should at least try the piano, and that all adults should try it again and stop saying, “I wish I had never stopped taking lessons.” It’s never too late and actually picking it up now will only help improve your life.

I know, many don’t want to invest in lessons. They can be expensive! And leaving the house or making the time can be a hassle if you already have a busy schedule. But guess what? You don’t have to anymore!

You are so spoiled that there is actually a computer program that will teach you how to play, in the comfort of your own home. You can learn whenever you want, at what speed, which songs…you name it.

It even makes learning how to read music fun, if you can believe that!

The software can teach you how to play by ear as well, there are even some free lessons you can try.

Okay, so now that I’ve listed at least 10 reasons why you should learn.

Leave me a comment below why YOU want to learn to play. And if you decide to try out the computer program, please come back and tell me what you thought of it!

You can read my full review of it by clicking this link.

Happy Learning!
