How Often Should You Practice

The question of how often should one practice the piano is one you will find various answer to. From most teachers for most teachers, the recommendation would be to practice between 30-60 minutes per day. If you are a more focused player and plan on being a concert pianist than that number would go up much higher. But that truly is the answer here, the number of minutes or hours one should play has mostly to do with what you want to get out of it, how quickly you learn and how much you struggle.

Playing instruments of any kind sometimes comes easier to some than others, personally even though I would have benefited from more practice, I did not need that much in order to “pass” whatever was being asked of me, and since I enjoyed playing rather than practicing drills, I tended to not practice that often. I’m still quite adept at the piano, though I’d never claim to be the best or an expert, I simply love to play and that is all that is important to me.

So that is really the only question you need to ask yourself. What are your goals? How quickly do you learn? How much time can you and/or do you want to devote? And that will be your answer. There is nothing set in stone that says that if you don’t practice everyday for 1 to 2 hours you will not be successful, I am living proof of that 😛

So do what feels right for you, the biggest thing is you still want to enjoy yourself, you don’t ever want it to feel a chore, if it does, than perhaps it isn’t right for you, or perhaps you have set your goals and standards too high for yourself.

Start with thirty minutes a day, if those fly by, then you can probably easily make it an hour, and who knows, if you have more time than that to devote and it is simply fun and relaxing for you, play until your fingers just can’t play anymore 😉
