Playing Piano Can Help Depression

Did you know that playing piano can help with depression? Speaking from experience, no matter what seems to be the problem, whenever I sit at the keys and get lost in a song I instantly feel better.

If your depression is caused by life circumstances, stresses and the like rather than a chemical imbalance, playing the piano can truly help. It is one of the best distractions in my life and as you’ve probably heard, music saves lives. This is a true statement because music makes us feel. Even if the feeling at the moment is sadness, truly allowing yourself to feel that can help you heal the wounds.

If you don’t already know how to play the piano, learning it can help ten times over because the art of learning how to play is a beautiful distraction and one that will leave you feeling not only refreshed but with a sense of accomplishment. Like exercising, the adrenaline or rush from playing the piano can actually add things to your body that you may have been missing that can help balance out the sad feelings inside you.

Playing slow and melancholy pieces, perhaps something you are feeling makes the piano an extension of your heart. It allows you to express how you are feeling and hear it on the outside of you. It is very therapeutic, just as listening can be, playing can be even better.

Depression has many different levels from mild to severe, all levels can be impacted by music however and I highly recommend giving the piano a try if you are feeling down or stressed from life. Playing loud booming songs can be a great way to release tension and anger, and soft melodic pieces can help calm you and make you feeling one with whatever is going on around you.

If you are feeling sad or down, try sitting at the keys and see what happens, you don’t even have to know what you are doing or how to play to explore the keys and make some sort of music. Leave a comment if you try the piano, let me know if it helped you as it has helped me.
